Once you've taken your first pottery class, the next decision is whether to keep paying per class or switch to a studio membership. The right choice depends on where you are in your pottery practice.
Take Classes If...
- You're new to pottery (less than 3 months in)
- You need structured instruction
- You can only commit to once a week
- You haven't decided if pottery is a long-term hobby
A 6-week beginner course is the right starting point. You'll learn the fundamentals, finish some pieces, and figure out whether you want more.
Get a Membership If...
- You've been throwing for 3+ months
- You want to practice more than once a week
- You have specific projects in mind
- You'd rather work independently than in a class setting
A studio membership works out economically if you're going to the studio more than 2-3 times per week. Below that, classes or per-session passes are cheaper.
The Math
Per-class pricing in Charlotte averages $50-$65 per session. Studio memberships run $130-$200/month. That means membership breaks even at about 3-4 visits per month and saves money beyond that.
But the bigger factor isn't money. It's access. With a membership, you can drop in for an hour after work to throw a single piece. That kind of casual practice is impossible with class-based pricing.
The Hybrid Approach
Many serious potters do both: take advanced or specialized classes (like glaze chemistry or raku) while keeping a base membership for everyday practice. This combines structured learning with practice volume.
How to Decide
Track your studio hours. If you're spending 2-3 hours a week on pottery, classes are fine. If you wish you could spend 10 hours a week, you need a membership. Most students hit that wish around month 4-6 of regular practice.
