Handmade Christmas gifts mean more than store-bought, but the timeline is unforgiving. Here's how to plan pottery gifts that actually arrive on time.
Start by Mid-October
For pottery to be finished by Christmas Day, you need to throw or build by mid-October. Pottery takes 3-4 weeks from making to finished piece, and December studio schedules are packed with everyone making the same mistake.
If you're reading this in November, scale down to one or two recipients. If December, consider pottery gift cards instead.
Best Gift Pieces to Make
Mugs: Universal appeal, doesn't have to be perfect, uses last for years. 60 minutes to throw, 30 minutes to trim, glaze in week 2.
Bud vases: Smaller, faster, less material risk. Each takes 20-30 minutes on the wheel. Great for friends and coworkers.
Ring dishes / catch-alls: Handbuilt from slabs, very forgiving. Each takes 15-30 minutes.
Bowls: Medium-difficulty wheel work, useful, easy to glaze attractively. Plan 45 minutes per bowl.
How Many Can You Actually Make?
A realistic estimate for a beginner with one studio session per week:
- Week 1: throw 3-4 pieces (you'll lose 1-2 to mistakes)
- Week 2: throw 3-4 more, trim previous week's pieces
- Week 3: glaze previous pieces, throw more if time
- Week 4: finish glazing, await firing
So maybe 6-8 finished gift pieces in a four-week sprint. Plan recipients accordingly.
Backup: Gift Cards
If you're past the deadline, pottery gift cards work as the alternative. The recipient picks their own piece to make. Often more meaningful than your mediocre first mug.
Decoration and Branding
Adding initials, dates, or simple stamps before firing personalizes pieces without much extra work. A "2025" stamped on the foot of a mug becomes a dated keepsake.
Wrapping Pottery
Pottery is fragile. Wrap in bubble wrap, then tissue paper for presentation. Cylindrical mailing tubes work for mugs. Don't ship without testing the packaging on one piece first.
