Beginners on the pottery wheel make remarkably similar mistakes. Here are the ten most common, with the fix for each.
1. Off-Center Clay
The clay wobbles and you can feel it under your hands. You try to throw anyway and it gets worse.
Fix: Stop. Re-center using both hands, applying steady pressure. You cannot throw a centered piece from off-center clay.
2. Too Much Water
The clay feels slippery and the walls get weak.
Fix: Sponge water off frequently. Apply only enough water for lubrication. Slop = slump.
3. Not Enough Water
Your fingers stick, the clay tears, and the wall comes apart.
Fix: Add water consistently as you pull. The wall should feel slick under your fingers, not draggy.
4. Pulling Too Fast
Walls thin out unevenly and collapse partway up.
Fix: Slow down. Each pull should take 6-10 seconds from base to rim. Match wheel speed to your hand speed.
5. Pulling Too Hard at the Top
The rim flares out wildly or rips.
Fix: Reduce pressure as you approach the rim. The top of a pull should be lighter than the bottom.
6. Not Compressing the Base
S-cracks appear in the bottom of every piece after drying.
Fix: Use a rubber rib or your finger to firmly compress the floor of the piece before finishing.
7. Trying to Throw With Too Little Clay
You run out of material partway up and can't add height.
Fix: Use more clay than you think you need. A 6-inch bowl needs about 2 pounds. A 10-inch vase needs 4+ pounds.
8. Wedging Poorly (Or Not at All)
Air bubbles in the clay show up after firing as explosions or weak spots.
Fix: Wedge every piece of clay you throw. 30 wedges minimum, until the clay is uniform.
9. Trimming Too Early or Too Late
Too early: clay still wet, distorts under the tool. Too late: clay dry, hard to cut, ruins your tools.
Fix: Trim at "leather hard" — firm enough to hold its shape, soft enough that a fingernail leaves a mark.
10. Comparing Yourself to Instagram
You see Instagram pottery and feel like your work is terrible.
Fix: Most pottery on social media is by people who've been at it for 5-10+ years. Your week 4 bowl is not supposed to look like their week 400 bowl. Be patient.
